Counselling Children, Adolescents and Families: A Strengths-Based Approach

I have over fifteen years experience in talk and art therapies. I hold a Masters in Counselling Psychology and extensive training in art therapy, psychology and educational interventions. I am a 2nd Degree Reiki practitioner and use those skills to bring my clients the options of relaxation and self care support in addition to traditional counselling.

My therapeutic approach highlights the working alliance that values the relationship between client and their therapist. Whether short or long term therapy, I believe in helping my clients achieve their personal goals. Traditional talk therapy can be intimidating, especially for young people. Using experiential approaches, I walk beside my clients as they recognize the power they hold to create wellness in their lives, experience growth, and reach their full potential.

Allowing children and youth to be creative throughout the therapeutic process enables us to see the world through their eyes, which I believe to be an essential part of assisting them overcome the challenges in their lives.

Marriage and Family Therapists are rigorously trained, highly skilled professionals with a unique approach to healing. We view people within their relationships, which gives a fuller picture of who you are and how you got there.

We will help you evaluate your life and understand what has kept you stuck, then help you make the necessary changes. Everyone deserves to have their story heard and be supported as they work to make changes in their lives. I believe that through a safe and non-judgmental space and empathetic collaboration we are better equipped to begin making these changes in our lives.

If you are feeling stuck, anxious, worried, depressed know that you are not alone and there is hope. If you are experiencing loss, transitions, suicidal thoughts, or relationship challenges therapy can be a safe place to explore this. These life issues may provoke feelings such as anxiety, confusion, and loss. I have been working in Toronto for the last 25 years and will now be seeing clients during the week in Winnipeg and once a month in Toronto. I use a number of therapeutic strategies and models in my work with clients including, solution focused brief therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, and mindfulness approaches.

Your child is struggling, feeling unhappy, anxious, they're acting out. Things bother them a lot, but trying to get them to talk only seems to make things worse.

Why is The Secure Child different?

You need help and your child needs help. I understand it can be really hard to take that step towards getting them outside support. Let us help you help your child make real changes that leave them--and you--feeling better. I work with young people and parents having conflicts make a better home for everyone. I am not your typical therapist. Clients have told me I am easy to talk to and they don't feel judged.

I have experience working with all issues and would love the chance to work with what ever issues are in the way of living the life you want! Using an anti-oppressive practice framework, the empowerment approach, and cognitive behavioural therapy, clients are able to identify values, create an identity, and develop the skills necessary to wrestle with the grey areas of life. I obtained my Bachelor of Social Work program at Booth University College where I was awarded the Chancellor's Medal for high academic achievement and exemplary community service work.

It is important that through the therapeutic process you feel heard, respected, and empowered - working through difficult issues in a supportive environment makes all the difference.

I work with clients to help them explore and develop a strong base of resources, strengths, and coping tools to help support them through difficulties and to move towards their personal goals. Through this process we then begin to explore the client's emotional and relational needs and what may be behind them - helping them to move towards being able to recognize, understand, and express their true selves.

I use an attachment-based, relational, and psychodynamic model. Feeling overwhelmed like it is all just too much or underwhelmed and left feeling like there must be more to life are common feelings for many. Finding the balance in life can prove difficult in practice no matter how great it sounds in theory but having a trusted guide can help.

I am excited to offer counselling services and supports with multiple options for therapeutic approach and a wide range of strategies and tools that serve to effectively support children, youth and adults toward their individual counselling goals. Valley Art Therapy is here to provide support as you work through life's challenges, whatever they may be for you. Guided by a client-centered, strength-based approach to counselling, I create a safe, respectful and non-judgmental setting in which clients can explore issues, gain insights, and experience growth and healing.

If you are looking for a listener, coach, and teacher who is gentle, understanding, and insightful I believe in the resilience of humankind and my approach supports people in using perhaps discovering their strengths on their healing journey.

I work with individuals, couples and families to enhance personal and relationship goals. Counseling should be a collaborative process, based on goals and values of compassion and authenticity. Harnessing the client's personal, family and community resources in this way also helps counteract their feelings of powerlessness and the possibility of increasing reliance on professional services. Part One outlines the basic principles of a solution-focused and strengths-based approach, tackling such thorny issues as how and when to use diagnosis.

Part two describes creative applications of the approach, using groupwork, play-based activities and video feedback. Part Three, examines practical issues which arise in more 'difficult' cases, such as child abuse and suicidal teenagers and children. This book is aimed at professionals and trainees in fields including social work, mental health, childcare, education, psychotherapy and counselling. See All Customer Reviews. Shop Textbooks.
